Hampi plates are made from naturally shed leaves of a special kind found in tropical countries. The process uses absolutely no chemicals or toxins.
The fact that these plates also generate income to micro-entrepreneurs in low-income countries is being socially responsible and a competitive advantage in itself.
So, how did we get started?
While doing an internship with ABN AMRO Bank?s Sustainability Department in India, Frederic was invited by Vikram, an entrepreneur and a graduate from the IIT Delhi, to an Indian friend?s wedding. They were impressed by the natural leaf made plates, substitute for cheap plastics or expensive porcelains, being used to serve the buffet (it is not easy to have all the 1400 odd wedding guests seated). Following a 3 month research locating the producers in the rural country side, they found that these plates were neither strong enough nor export worthy. After another few months of experimenting and innovating to find the ideal characters for the plate, the following summer Frederic and Vikram drove down to the sunny Dutch Beach of Bloemendaal to talk to a few beach clubs and restaurants.
The first three chefs were busy, the fourth was interested but already had his stocks full for the season, and the fifth, squinting at the sun, asked ?How soon can u deliver 5000 of these???
